About SOS

The SOS Children’s Villages

SOS Children’s Villages offer long term family-based care for children who have lost their parents or who cannot be raised by their biological family.

Each SOS family has a house of its own within the village. An SOS mother cares for 8-10 children within each family, and 15-20 houses make up the village under the care of a Village Director.

The SOS Mother takes on the biological parents’ responsibilities of providing for the emotional, psychological and material needs of her children. She also plays a pivotal role in instilling the kind of values and knowledge in her children that they will need to blossom into successful young adults. SOS Mothers are experts at creating family ties, since they are asked to look after a diverse flock of children, boys and girls of different ages.

Every SOS Children’s Village has a Village Director who acts as an advisor and support to the children, youth, SOS mothers and other staff. He is responsible for ensuring community cohesion and representing the Village within the broader community. The Village Director is a kind, trustworthy, supportive father figure.
